Cross-curricular links

To get as many links to the rain forest as possible, in Geography, the class had to produce their own weather forecasts from a topical location. They had to stand up in pairs and present the weather to the rest of the class. Linking to Literacy, they were asked to use adjectives and expanded noun phrases in their weather forecasts, in order to make them more interesting and descriptive.

In Science, plants have been the area of study. The class had to sow beans to see which germinated first – the root or shoot. They kept a bean diary on the speed of growth.

For the second experiment, they placed celery sticks into coloured water to see water transportation in action.

For the third experiment, they are currently testing to see if light makes a difference to germination. This is quite interesting, as on the forest floor, light is limited due to the canopy layer blocking out the majority of light. It will be interesting to compare the germination of the seeds allowed light, and those without light.
