This half term has seen some excellent learning based around the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’.

The students have produced some impressive persuasive letters and have been learning about volcanoes in Geography, as well as different types of rocks in Science.

These rocks were made using chocolate and clearly show the different layers of sedimentary rock.

We also did a visual demonstration of a volcanic eruption. One volcano was borrowed from the resource centre at Thompson House. This involved mixing vinegar and red food colouring with sodium bicarbonate. The other was a homemade volcano from Laurence and involved mixing sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, flour and water.

Both volcanoes produced differing eruptions – the vinegar eruption was fast and furious and the citric acid one was slower but produced more bubbles. The children were thoroughly impressed!
